Our Services

At Mid-Modern Eyecare, Dr. Andrus believes in providing personalized, high-quality care without the limitations of vision plans. That’s why we don’t contract directly with vision insurance—but we do help patients claim their vision benefits, saving them money while still giving them the freedom to choose the best care and materials. By working directly with each patient, Dr. Andrus is able to take more time during appointments, offer better-quality frames processed at a local Great Lakes Bay Region lab, and ensure that care decisions are made based on individual needs—not insurance restrictions. We also work with most medical plans to keep treatment accessible and affordable.

What We
Offer

01

Comprehensive Eye Exam

If you’ve recently had a vision screening, you might assume your eyes are perfectly healthy—but a vision screening only offers a limited view. It typically checks distance vision and misses crucial aspects like depth perception, eye coordination, and overall eye health. These screenings are often done by individuals without specialized training and with minimal equipment, making them insufficient for detecting early signs of disease. A comprehensive eye exam, on the other hand, thoroughly evaluates both vision and eye health using advanced tools and expert analysis. It includes internal and external eye exams, tests for glaucoma, and assessments of how your eyes work together. Regular comprehensive exams—every two years for adults under 60, and annually after 61—are essential for maintaining long-term eye health.

03

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy (VT) is a personalized, non-invasive treatment designed to improve visual skills and make everyday life easier. While commonly used for children, adults can benefit too—especially those experiencing symptoms like headaches, eye strain, or double vision due to poor visual coordination. VT targets skills such as tracking, depth perception, peripheral vision, and focus shifting, helping both eyes work together more effectively. Conducted in-office and supported by at-home exercises, vision therapy uses tools like lenses, prisms, and specific exercises to enhance visual performance and comfort without the need for surgery or medication.

05

Medical Eye Care

Medical eye care covers the diagnosis, management, and treatment of serious eye conditions that can affect your vision and overall health. These include diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that can damage the blood vessels in the retina; macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults; glaucoma, often called the “silent thief of sight”; cataracts, which cause clouding of the eye’s natural lens; and keratoconus, a progressive thinning of the cornea. Early detection and expert care are essential to protect and preserve your vision.

02

Pediatric Eye Care

Children and toddlers don’t know what they can’t see—so vision problems often go unnoticed. Since they have no frame of reference, they may not realize their eyes are blurry, overworking, or not working together properly. Clear vision is essential not only for learning and development but also for physical activities and play. Dr. Andrus recommends a first dilated eye exam around 9 months of age for healthy, full-term babies, with future exams based on individual risk factors. Pediatric eye exams differ from those for adults and teens, using specialized tools to assess eye alignment, health, and how well both eyes work together. Parents should watch for signs like squinting, holding things close, short attention spans, or avoiding close-up activities, as these may indicate a vision issue that needs attention.

04

Dry Eye Treatments

Dry eye can significantly impact your quality of life, leading to discomfort, blurry vision, tired eyes, and a burning sensation. While mild cases may benefit from eye drops, Dr. Andrus offers advanced treatments that address the root cause—inflammation of the eyelid’s oil glands. Options include Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, thermal gland expression, specialty scleral contact lenses, and medications like antibiotics or steroids to reduce inflammation. Additional treatments such as stem cell grafts and gland probing can help restore proper oil flow and repair damage to the eye’s surface. With personalized care and innovative options—all provided in the comfort of a dry eye massage chair—Dr. Andrus can help improve tear quality and restore lasting comfort.
